These days more than 50% Americans prefer for eco-friendly products. Because of these demands as well as increasing global climate change concerns, companies have begun to focus on the PR campaigns and marketing materials around eco-consciousness and sustainability.

As the demand for food and beverages (F&D) commodities is rising, these industries also must begin to adopt sustainability and environment friendly consciousness throughout all processes. Here are some useful tips for Food and beverage industry to step towards sustainability.

Reuse Wastewater!

In F&D industry, water is used on very large amount in production for various tasks such as washing raw materials, boiling, bottling and many more. So water conservation becomes one of the most impartant sustainability concern for the makers.

As large volume of wastewater has been produced, it can be reused by implementing filtration and disinfection technique. To increase sustainability, food and beverages makers must focus on finding new innovative ways according to their requirement to purify wastewater. This practice will definitely help makers to save water and reduce environmental impact effectively.

Say “No” to Plastic

According to unenvironment.org, global output of plastic waste rose more in a single decade than it had in the last 40 years. It also states that more than 90% of the plastic waste is carried by 10 rivers alone that ends up in the oceans.

When it comes to Food and beverage industry, the plastic is used on very large scale to make containers and bags for packaging and delivery purpose, or plastic cups, straws, and plates etc. are used to serve food and drinks. Mostly these products are used for single use that generates large amount of plastic waste. Also, data says that one million single-use plastic drinking bottles are purchased in every minute and 5 trillion plastic bags are used every year worldwide.

Banning plastic in every stage of production has become necessary. But, if the plastic use is unavoidable, food and beverages maker must opt for reusable plastic products. When consumers takeaway the food or drinks, cafes or restaurants can offer discounts if they bring their ecofriendly cups or spoons and forks.

Buy Raw Ingredients from Local Market

Many raw materials including meat/chicken/sea food or milk products etc. need to be kept in suitable temperature for the preservation. So while transporting it to longer distance, the vehicle must be equipped with refrigerators. If not handled well, the ingredient get damaged and not be used.

Buying material from local market or farmers not only helps to get fresher raw ingredients but it also supports the community’s economy. Plus, it reduces transportation cost and time. The use of energy and fuel producing carbon emissions that contributes to climate change can be saved too.
